Sometimes people, particularly those in positions like mine, forget about just how good we have it as far as technology is concerned.  Sometimes, as comedian Louis CK suggests, it might even take a recession to make us stop and marvel at just how spoiled we really are.  Well worth a listen.

I was an Army Brat living in Germany 1n 1952. As a 6-year-old, I got to see what war can do to a country and its people. Rubble, men with stumps for limbs, begging for American cigarette butts.... Hungry Europeans. "Master race". Belief in Ideology. Stupidity.
I think living in another culture is the most valuable education a child can get. Rich nation, poor nation--white people, brown people: we are all the same.
No matter our beliefs, our color, our religion--we all bleed red, we all need food, we all need shelter and clothing...and love. once we know this, how can we treat another human being like garbage?
I AM you. You ARE me. What else do we need to know?
